YUDANSHA - SOKE

David P. Roberts
 10th Dan

David’s interest in the Martial Arts was sparked in 1963 while in the military. At that time there wasn’t a lot of Karate available, so he took whatever he could find. Seeing Karate used during his tours in Vietnam made him realize its true potential.

In 1967 David decided he was going to get serious about Karate and started his studies in earnest. Being in the military he was transferred regularly and this meant finding new instructors at each move. This he did, not caring what style was available he was more interested in gaining the knowledge each of the newfound teachers had to offer than what the styles origin was.

During this time he studied in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, and of course the United States. David feels that of all the knowledge he has gained throughout the world, America was and is the best!

David has acquired Black Belts in several styles of Martial Arts (Tae Kwon Do, Chinese Kenpo, American Karate and Ching Sai Do). The highest ranking of which is a 10th Degree. With his experience, and years of training, David has a vast amount of diverse knowledge to offer. He likes to say that a lot of his knowledge came from hard knocks.

Violence and crime touched his life early, as it has many others, and David decided to do something about it. He has been teaching self defense ever since. One of David’s favorite sayings is "you don't really know a technique until you teach it to someone else."

Along with David teaching self-defense he is a sought after speaker and instructor for the "Refuse To Be A Victim®" program, the "Rape Awareness and Prevention (RAP)" Organization and the ACC (Anti Crime Crusade).

His thirst for knowledge and his dedication to teaching the Martial Arts was recognized when in 1998 he was inducted into the "World Karate Union Hall of Fame". He was also certified as a Reiki Master Teacher that same year.

His favorite Self Defense saying is: “You must match, and exceed, the brutality of the attacker to survive”.

JOHN F. BARTSCH (JACK)
  7th Dan

Jack was born and raised in Brooklyn NY. He learned at an early age the benefits of being able to defend himself.

Martial Arts was the natural progression in learning how to fight and when he joined the Air Force (as a medic) the opportunity presented itself. His first Martial Arts training was in Shotokan Karate under the tutelage of Robert (Bob) Lindsley. It was strictly the foundation of good Karate; strong, hard basics! This has stayed with him throughout his career.

Jack, applied for, and was accepted as a candidate for the Air Commando training (medical counter-insurgency). At this time he was introduced to many styles and techniques of Jujitsu and Karate.

During the Vietnam conflict, Jack was assigned to Nakhom Phanom Thailand, Civic Action Center. He served in both Thailand and Laos. During this period he learned and exchanged martial arts techniques with his peers.

From there he went to Misawa, Japan and was able to continue his training in Shotokan Karate. While assigned there he was selected several times to go on temporary duty to Korea. While in Korea he studied Tang Soo Do (Korean version of Shotokan Karate), and Chun Do Kwon, Tae Kwon Do.

He was getting a varied and strong back ground in the Martial Arts.

Jack came to Texas, as an instructor in medical radiology, where he met his "old mentor" Bob Lindsley. They trained for awhile, but Bob said he needed to find a new instructor. Bob had nothing more to teach him.

Jack found a school in Wichita Falls that taught Tae Kwon Do, Shotokan and something called Kenpo. The school was run by another Air Force Instructor, David P. Roberts.

Jack immediately put forth full effort in learning this new art. Within 6 months, Jack was asked to join instructor training, and he received his instructor certification in May of 1973.

Jack has a passion for teaching and has had schools in Texas, Virginia, Nevada, and Florida. With his passion for teaching and thirst for knowledge Jack has sought out, and has trained with, many of the greatest Masters. His thirst for knowledge is never ending.

He presently holds Black Belts in Kenpo, Tae Kwon Do and Ching Sai Do; the highest rank being a 7th Degree Black Belt.

Jack always likes to say: "
A black belt covers about 1 ¾” to 2" of your butt.... The rest is up top you."
